Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) at Open House Chicago

After more than 30 years in Daniel Burnham’s iconic Railway Exchange Building, SOM’s Chicago studio decided it was time to rethink their space in 2020. Encircling the building’s airy, terracotta-clad lightwell, the renovated office embodies the workshop-style atmosphere of the best design ateliers. The Railway Exchange Building, also known as Santa Fe Building, was originally designed by D. H. Burnham & Company, an architecture firm that succeeded Burnham and Root, and was founded by Daniel Burnham. The building was completed in 1904 and today houses the offices of several architecture firms. SOM Chicago will open its doors on Saturday to guided tours. Tours will feature the 10th floor studios as well as the Interiors and Materials library on the 9th floor.
