Cubs’ late rally falls short in a 10–8 loss to Cincinnati

The Cubs made an August Friday at Wrigley interesting to the end, but their late comeback could not erase the damage from Cincinnati's middle innings. The Reds won 10–8 on August 28 after Chicago had led 3–0.
The decisive turn came in the sixth. According to the Associated Press game report carried by ESPN, Cincinnati scored five times in the inning, including a three-run home run by Tyler Stephenson. Cubs reliever Trent Thornton surrendered five runs while recording two outs.
Chicago answered in the eighth. Seiya Suzuki drove in a run with a double, and rookie Pedro Ramírez hit a three-run homer to bring the Cubs within 9–8. It was enough to restore the possibility of a comeback, but Cincinnati finished with the win.
The afternoon had the familiar ingredients of a late-summer Wrigley outing: sunshine breaking around large clouds, a green outfield and food in the stands. On the field, though, the story kept changing. An early Chicago advantage gave way to a difficult sixth inning, then a rally that made the final margin close.
For the Cubs, the missed opportunity was clear. Eight runs provided plenty of offense; the inning they could not contain proved more consequential than the comeback they nearly completed.
